10/6/2014: The Plastic Story!
The plastic story! We would all like to see Antigua Barbuda become a plastic free Island!! yeah!
I know this is a big issue but we will start here by publishing each week 10 ways for us to eliminate the use of plastic! send your ideas and comments.
Here we go:
1. Bring your own cloth or reusable bags to the grocery store (or any store!). Just keep them in your car so you do not forget!
2. Don’t buy beverages bottled in plastic. Glass is great.
3. Get a glass or reusable water bottle.
4. Get all beverages in a ceramic, or reusable cup.
5. Carry your own baskets to the vegetable market (we all used to)
6. Don’t buy convenience foods packages in plastic.
7. Make your own bread.
8. Buy your bread from bakeries that package in paper.
9. Clean with baking soda and vinegar instead of cleaners packaged in plastic.
10. Buy laundry detergent in boxes, not liquid in plastic containers.
We have done it! Ground breaking ceremony!
Our Ground Breaking ceremony was a great success, so the Agave Gardens centre is on its way! Thank you to all and in particular the very hard working building committee and His Excellenct The Governor General Dr. Rodney Williams.

As we are all aware we have engaged Sam Fuller Landscape Architect to render our land use and she has submitted a preliminary, work in progress ….
Patrick Ryan, Chair of the building committee has advised that we await the approvals from DCA. We are delayed with the political change over.
We are reviewing the serious Lethal Yellowing of our Palms, we must keep
everyone informed.
Symptoms and Signs:
Our Palms continue to be infected at an alarming rate
No single symptom is diagnostic of lethal yellowing. Symptoms are variable among palms and in the case of coconuts, among cultivars. It is the pattern of appearance and chronological progression of symptoms that accurately identifies the disease.
Confirmation of lethal yellowing is based on many symptoms, at least 36 palm species have been documented as susceptible to lethal yellowing, but coconut palm (Cocos nucifera) is most vulnerable to the disease, followed by Pritchardia species, Christmas palm (Adonidia merrillii), and date palm (Phoenix dactylifera).
Once the disease is confirmed, the palm must be destroyed, cut down and burned.

On a recent visit to our member Delrose Hixon’s garden, she taught us that borders and edging is a required finishing touch and repetition always works with edgers, she choose rocks, well done Delrose!
