The ANTIGUA & BARBUDA Horticultural Society thanks all who attended the show and participated in our Flower arranging and plant competition.
Here are some of the highlights:
The show started at 10 am when we welcomed the public to visit the competition room, where our judges led by Ms. Heather Mannix Mrs. Myrna Kelsick and Mrs. Sylvanna Moses showed us the winners and the ‘best in the show’.
Ms. Agnes Meeker introduced and built little stands of coconut bough, and wattle, and we used one as our entrance booth, Agnes and Dick Goulette also offered golf cart rides for anyone needing help to enjoy the scenery and get around the grounds, it was a huge success.
The vendors old and new show cased their beautiful collections of plants and flowers, orchids, palms and fruit trees, with several stalls selling the wonderful Tropical exotics, Gingers, Heleconias, anthuriums, many grown here on the island.
A new ‘wild medicinal garden’ introduced by the Horticultural Society, of plants found on the site and tagged for their uses.
We dedicated a tent to the discussions of Lethal Yellow of our Palm trees, by introducing the head Horticulturist from the Four Seasons of Nevis with the help of Mr. Tony Johnson of Siboney and LIAT with a ticket and with his information and personal experience Dane shared with us how to assist the Agricultural extension office and the public, we also had the privilege to introduce Mr. ‘Tubby’ Derrick to speak on his experiences with treating the dreaded Lethal Yellow disease from an organic perspective.
Then to our many demonstrations Mr. Danny Joseph filled the tent as he showed us all how to graft and bud our trees.
We were serenated by the Royal Police band as one and all enjoyed the delectable tea at the Hort. Café, and Local cuisine where one could take home freshly baked bread. For further information visit the Web sites www.antiguahorticulture.com.
