The Antigua
and Barbuda Horticultural Society plans events throughout the
year and we hope that some of the Friends will be here to participate in them.
We are pleased to update our
wonderful new greenhouse, which is an integral part of our gardens,

Backyard Gardening

Green
House/Shade House
We are delighted to see that it is already well-stocked
with our collections of AgaveÕs aloes, cactus, succulents, Frangipani,
Oleander, bromeliads and lignum vitae, with a special seasonal display of ÒSnow
on the MountainÓ. Plants are available for display and sale.

Garden Services Data
Base
We
have now established a Garden Services Database that covers many aspects of
horticulture and is already proving popular and effective.

For
example: Do you need available gardening personnel? Are you
experiencing tree or plant problems? This service is complimentary.
The Agave Garden has two major events a year.
First there is the Annual Flower Show that was held in April
20l6 and was enjoyed by a great crowd.
Take note of the 20l7 Flower Show will be held on Saturday, 8th April.
The 20l7 Show will be bigger and better than
ever! Not to be missed.
Take advantage of the Flower Arranging Session so that your chances of being
best in Show are enhanced. Start thinking well ahead of
the plants you wish to enter, and get cracking early.
The Agave Garden second event is to be held on Saturday, 3rd December under the
patronage of His Excellency the Governor General,
Sir Rodney Williams, The Agave ÒSunset SocialÓ will invite you to get into
the Christmas spirit with wonderful events. These include
plant stalls with a variety of flowering Christmas plants seasonal food stalls,
local seasonal drinks, a special auction, and affordable gifts with gift-wrapping
from the Agave shop.
A highlight will be the very magnificent Vitus entertainment. Enjoy an early Merry Christmas
time from 2.30 pm to 6.00 pm
The Gardens
Our gardens are being developed in
spite of the fact that we have had a devastating three-year drought, on the island;
our aim is to plant water wise plants.
Our first collection is the Aloe
Garden, then the Desert Rose garden.
We also invite members to host a
garden.

The Society is also making an impact
on horticultural education with informative workshops, garden visits and
educational programs at its monthly meetings. These bring
together like-minded members of the community who wish to join together for the
development of horticulture in Antigua. The general public is
invited to attend these exciting events for which there will be a registration
fee - members EC$10: non-members EC$15.
A database is being developed of
garden services. If you can provide any related service, please
register with the Society.

We look forward to your participation
in the activities of The Antigua and Barbuda Horticultural Society
We aim to attract more Friends who wish
to participate in this venture, even though they are not here all the time and
cannot be "hands-on".
Members are urged to invite
visiting friends and family to join with us to make the Agave Garden a great
botanical garden for Antigua and Barbuda.
We hope that tourists will also have a stake in our land by becoming an
involved Friend.

The Agave Garden is developing to
display the flowers; plants, medicinal herbs, trees and landscape of Antigua
with a West Indian style Agave Centre. The Garden will offer a
serene escape from busy lives and an opportunity to become more aware of the
natural beauty of Antigua.
